Adrian Newey Regrets Suspension Switch for Ayrton Senna's Fatal Crash

Newey's Poignant Recollections of Imola 1994

In an exclusive interview with Sky F1, renowned Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey has shared deeply personal insights about the tragic accident that claimed Ayrton Senna's life at Imola in 1994.

Newey's Regret: Active Suspension Error

Newey has expressed profound regret over the switch from active to passive suspension that was implemented on Senna's Williams car prior to the fatal race.

"I think we completely messed it up," Newey said. "The passive suspension was introduced in response to a règlement change, but we didn't fully understand how it would affect the car. We missed the boat."

Newey believes that the switch contributed to the instability of Senna's car, which ultimately led to the high-speed crash.

Tribute to Senna's Aura

Beyond technical considerations, Newey also paid tribute to Senna's immeasurable impact on the sport and his own life.

"Ayrton was a great man with an infusive aura," Newey said. "He was an intense competitor, but he also had a deep sense of fair play and compassion."

Newey's emotional reflections on Senna and the events of Imola provide a poignant reminder of the tragic loss that Formula 1 endured that fateful weekend.
